Newton teenager wins scholarships and awards at Philadelphia International Music Festival – News – Newton TAB
The Philadelphia International Music Festival is giving over $ 12,000 in scholarships and prestigious performance opportunities to eleven young musicians who took first places at the annual PIMF Concert Competition, including 14-year-old Keila Wakao from Newton.
Wakao won the division for 12- to 14-year-olds, earning a $ 1,500 scholarship to PIMF programs in 2021 for her performance of Final Movement: Max Bruch’s Allegro energico by Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 26
Wakao will take to the stage at the PIMF Winners’ Circle Concert with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, to be scheduled this winter or next spring as soon as COVID-19 conditions allow.
“The Philadelphia International Music Festival has been hosting international competitions for over 20 years,” said PIMF President Sandy Marcucci, “but this is a year like no other. Musicians in four age groups from the ages of eight to 19 presented video recordings that were judged by a panel that included international piano soloist Svetlana Smolina, director of the piano program at the Philadelphia International Music Festival; Daniel Han, violin, Philadelphia Orchestra; Louis Scaglione, president and music director of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra; and Gi Lee, the clarinet faculty of the Philadelphia International Music Festival and the Residence Artist at Boyer College of Music at Temple University.
