Umno prefers postponement of Dewan Rakyat's session | New Straits Times
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno said today that it was normal for Dewan Rakyat's session to be postponed.
Its secretary general, Tan Sri Annuar Musa, said that when Pakatan Harapan formed the government in 2018 after the 14th general election, the lower house of parliament did not meet until two months after the formation of the federal government.
In a Twitter post today, he said the new federal government needed time to fix many problems before the Dewan Rakyat could meet.
"This involves the formation of cabinet, the appointment of a president, questions from members of parliament and responses from the government," he said.
"There should be a delay but not because of Covid-19," he said.
Ketereh MP responded to remarks by Dewan Rakyat President Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof on Thursday, where he said there were no plans to delay the sitting of Parliament in the middle of ; Covid-19 epidemic.
It was after two deputies came into close contact with a confirmed patient of Covid-19. The two deputies were tested negative yesterday.
Under the Federal Constitution, the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong must convene the sitting parliament no later than six months from the last day of the previous sitting.
The last meeting of the lower house of parliament was the budget session last October.
The Dewan Rakyat was to have its first meeting between March 9 and April 16.
Article 55 [1] of the Federal Constitution states: "The Yang Di-Pertuan Agong convenes Parliament from time to time and does not allow six months to elapse between the last sitting of a session and the date set for its first meeting next session. "
However, the constitution says nothing about the consequences if more than six months go by.
The first meeting of Parliament is pending following the change of government.
Ariff said on Monday that he was still awaiting an executive response on the Parliament meeting.
