Venezuela holds the head of the PDVSA lubricants unit; raids the homes of people appointed by Guaido
CARACAS (Reuters) – Venezuela has arrested the head of the lubricants division of the national oil company Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA.UL) following allegations of corruption, according to a statement read on national television on Wednesday.
In addition, the intelligence police raided the homes of several current and former executives of the Colombian subsidiary of PDVSA, Monomeros, appointed by the leader of the opposition Juan Guaido, said three people familiar with the & Affair.
Authorities raided properties in Caracas and elsewhere in Venezuela of executives now residing in Colombia, the sources said.
These measures come in a reshuffle to the PDVSA after President Nicolas Maduro last month appointed a committee to restructure the petroleum industry of the OPEC nation, which is struggling under US sanctions intended to force the ouster of Maduro as well as years of mismanagement, corruption and declining cash flow.
Authorities arrested two directors of PDVSA's supply and trade division last week, later accusing them of collaborating with Washington. And the government has decided to seize the assets of six private shipping agents on the debt owed to PDVSA.
In the press release, the restructuring committee appointed by Maduro accused Oscar Aponte, president of PDVSA's VASSA division of engine oils and lubricants, of having participated in the smuggling of the company's products and of having received commissions on overpriced transit contracts.
Reuters could not immediately reach Aponte to comment or determine whether he was represented by a lawyer. Relatives of the two leaders arrested last week have denied allegations against them, saying they were accused of fighting corruption within PDVSA.
Neither PDVSA nor the Venezuelan petroleum or information ministries immediately responded to requests for comment on the raids on the homes of members of the Monomeros board of directors.
Guaido, the leader of the National Assembly of Venezuela controlled by the opposition, recognized by the United States, Colombia and dozens of other countries as the legitimate president of the South American country, has took control of Monomeros de Maduro last year and appointed its own interim board of directors.
"Surprisingly, after almost a year, the Sebin (intelligence police) began a sort of simultaneous hunt for the properties of the executives," said one of the witnesses, who spoke under cover of 39; anonymity.
The leaders currently live in Colombia, but some still own property in Venezuela.
