Pediatrician: Summer is not the usual season for RSV cases | Central Missouri News
Colombia-In some local hospitals, the number of cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is increasing for the first time in the summer.
by CDC website, RSV is “a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild cold-like symptoms.”
According to the CDC, the majority of people tend to recover in a week or two. However, for infants and the elderly, the virus can be serious.
Dr. Chris Wilhelm is a MU Healthcare Pediatrician and is aware that it is not normal.
“I’ve been caring for my kids and have been doing this for over 20 years,” Wilhelm said. “I haven’t seen RSV in the summer until this summer.”
Wilhelm said he expects the RSV season to be usually from November to April. But this year was different.
“We mostly see flip-flops,” Wilhelm said. “That’s because in the normal RSV season, we all wore masks and the kids were at home.”
Things are finally open. Children are returning to day care. People are traveling again.
As a result, Wilhelm said RSV was on the road.
“If your child has those symptoms,” Wilhelm said. “Please see your family doctor.”
Wilhelm said there was no cure or drug for RSV, only supportive care.
Wilhelm encourages parents to keep an eye on their symptoms and keep their children at home in case of illness.
“If your children are ill, don’t send them to day care,” Wilhelm said. “What happens is that one sick child turns into seven sick children.”
