Manitoba Cases Related to Possible Hepatitis Recalled Frozen Mango: State
A possible case of hepatitis A in Winnipeg-Manitoba is associated with frozen mangoes recalled by the Public Health Agency of Canada, the state announced Thursday.
Manitoba said in a news release that affected people became ill between late March and mid-July 2021.
The recall was announced on July 31st and the products in question include the Nature’s Touch, Compliments, Irresistibles and President’s Choice brands.
In addition to the possible cases in Manitoba, three confirmed cases (two in Quebec and one in Nova Scotia) were identified.
The Public Health Agency of Canada advises those who purchase frozen fruit not to eat it and to throw it away or return it.
State health officials have consumed affected products within the last 14 days and people who have not been vaccinated against hepatitis A should contact HealthLinks to see if they need to be vaccinated. It states that it is necessary.
Health officials also advise those who have recalled mangoes to clean and disinfect all areas that fruit may have come into contact with.
If someone is uncertain whether their fruit is part of a recall, authorities advise people to be careful and throw it away before washing their hands with soapy water.
Symptoms of hepatitis A include fever, dark urine, loss of appetite, malaise, nausea, vomiting, gastric spasm, and jaundice. However, not all infected people show symptoms.
They usually appear 14 to 28 days after exposure, but can occur up to 50 days later. They are mild and can last less than 2 months, but severe symptoms can last up to 9 months.
The virus can spread to infected people, and the state says that no one diagnosed with hepatitis A should be provided with food or drink.
