Five Deschutes County Prison prisoners test positive for COVID-19
The first inmate outbreak since the pandemic began. Six staff members infected with virus in July
Bend, Oregon (KTVZ)-Five prisoners in one residential unit in Deschutes County Prison tested positive for COVID-19, which appears to be the first infection at the facility since the pandemic began.
On Tuesday evening, the prisoner showed symptoms of COVID, Sgt. Jason Janes said.
This prisoner was all tested for COVID, along with other prisoners in the residential unit. Five of the seven prisoners in this single housing unit tested positive for COVID.
Throughout the pandemic, the county prison said, “We have followed the guidelines of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Oregon Department of Health and have taken the necessary precautions to control infections to keep COVIDs out of the facility.”
According to Janes, the medical director at the sheriff’s office manages the care of positive cases and coordinates with Deschutes County Public Health.
According to OHA, there were several COVID-19 outbreaks in county prisons, including one in a workplace involving three prison staff and three families in Bend prison in late July. Weekly occurrence report..
Janes Said last month No prisoner has been infected with the virus in prison since the pandemic began.
The prison, built in 1994 to hold 452 prisoners, had 203 prisoners as of Wednesday, but reduced the number to keep them away.
In addition, each prisoner will be checked for temperature upon arrival and will be quarantined for 5 days if symptoms occur. Visits are video-only.
“If symptomatic prisoners arrive and need to be held in prison, they will be quarantined and monitored by medical staff,” Janes said.
