I am in Mental Health Services and am currently in the first trimester of the long-awaited pregnancy. Before Covid-19, my life was good. I enjoyed my work and worked hard. In fact, the only stress was trying to get pregnant. So, when it finally happened, we were excited.
Then the virus hit and we Pregnant women placed in high-risk, “clinically vulnerable” group By the government. For me, the situation changed rapidly and the safety of newborn babies quickly became a priority for me.
After some discussion, my employer performed a risk assessment because my job requires a considerable amount of time to meet with patients. They said that due to the importance of my role, they expected me to act as usual. But my role is currently unsafe, and so is the case for pregnant women. They cannot guarantee social distance, and few PPEs are available.
I’ve spent the last 8 weeks at home because my employer didn’t support me to keep my job safe. There is no option to reduce patient time or increase work from home. I’ve been negotiating with them on how to get back to work safely, but the situation during the writing is unchanged. I’m not willing to take any risk, so I’m running out of options.
Psychologically, this combined with the pregnancy hormone had a very bad effect on me. I will cry nonstop without worry someday. I know stress is bad for me and my newborn baby. This is a very fun time. Instead, the situation put a full fountain solution into my pregnancy. I’ve always wanted it.
Part of the stress is financial. My husband is self-employed and has lost his job. I haven’t been paid in full for the few weeks I’m on vacation. It makes me worry about the future-are they trying to drive me out? How do they treat me when I return? How is my maternity salary? And what about my job when returning from maternity leave? These are questions that are constantly in my mind.
What I don’t understand is why they were less cooperative than ever, and why they didn’t care about my mental health. They provided all the evidence from Pregnant Then Screwed and other sources explaining why pregnant women needed to be protected, but they ignored it. They also ignored the advice from my GP. I’ve been working in a company for many years and I’m shocked at how to handle it.
I am discriminated against because I am pregnant and unable to return to work. But I want-in a safe way for me and my unborn baby. I don’t know what will happen next or how you will be charged. I don’t know which direction I will turn because I run out of options.
