Highly infectious bird flu poses a “catastrophic” threat to RI poultry
East Providence, RI (WPRI) —Rhode Island Environmental Management Agency (DEM) and commercial poultry producers have found influenza that could increase bird mortality in several New England states. Warn the owner of the backyard chicken shed. Infect.
On January 14, the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in wild birds in South Carolina.

“This bird flu strain is deadly to chickens, turkeys, ducks, quails and other birds. It can cause significant financial damage to poultry producers in Road Island,” led DEM’s response. DVM’s state veterinarian Scott Marshall says. “For now, DEMs continue to monitor herd infections, but we encourage all poultry owners to take precautions to protect their herds by enhancing biosecurity.”

- Keep people away from birds
- Keep cages, sheds and clothes clean and disinfected
- Properly dispose of dead birds
- Avoid sharing equipment with other poultry producers / farmers
- Understand the signs of illness
- Report sick or abnormal bird deaths to DEM
DEM works closely with APHIS with the RI Ministry of Health (RIDOH) and the RI Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA) on risk monitoring and coordination of emergency response plans.
