Babies make a medical history with the world’s first heart and thymus transplant
An American baby made a medical history by receiving the world’s first heart and thymus transplant in a procedure that could change the way organs are transplanted.
Little Easton Cinnamon underwent surgery that doctors hoped could make the transplant more successful by reducing the body’s chances of rejecting the donated organs.
It can also reduce the need for patients to spend years taking medications that can cause kidney problems and even cancer to prevent rejection.
When a North Carolina Duke Health doctor transplanted a donated heart into Easton Cinnamon, the young man also received cultured tissue from the donor’s thymus.
The thymus stimulates the production of white blood cells, “T cells,” that prevent infection, and doctors expected Easton’s immune system to recognize the donor’s heart as their own.
The little boy was born with a defect in the heart that prevented one of the heart valves from closing, and he underwent open heart surgery to try to fix it in just five days.
However, this procedure was only partially successful, and doctors determined that he needed a heart transplant to survive.
Easton’s immune system wasn’t working to fight the infection either, so in August last year he became the first patient in the world to receive a new heart and cultured thymic tissue from the same donor.
A heart transplant was first made and his thymus was replaced two weeks later.
Young people are taking medicines to suppress the immune system to prevent rejection, but doctors should help his body accept new organs and stop taking medicines over the next year. Is called.
Easton, who is now alone, still gets food and medicine through feeding tubes, but his family is excited to take him home.
