Experts at the University of Leeds conducted a study that concluded that elevated blood fat levels in people suffering from type 2 diabetes and obesity could be very detrimental. To carry out this study, the team reproduced the blood fat levels observed in humans with metabolic disorders. This was done by exposing skeletal muscle cells to a fatty acid called palmitic acid. The cells then began transmitting ceramide signals. The ceramide signal is designed to reduce stress. In long-term conditions such as metabolic disorders, these signals can kill cells and make the condition more serious. It can also exacerbate the disease.
When these cells are mixed with other cells that were not previously exposed to fat, researchers have observed that they communicate with each other. The signal is then transported in a package called extracellular vesicles.
According to research director Lee Robertz, this study provided a perspective on how obesity can increase stress in an individual’s cells. According to Professor Roberts, it will also offer new options while looking for a cure for metabolic disorders. He explained that the Covid-19 pandemic increased the burden of chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes.
