Ireland is “very close” to zero Coronavirus case, Experts argue.

That’s after the blockade of New Zealand’s coronavirus was set to be completely lifted after successfully eliminating the killer bug.

Anthony Staines, a professor of health systems at the City University of Dublin, also said there has been significant progress in breaking the virus in other countries, including Ireland.

He told Morning Ireland at RTE Radio One: “Greece achieved this to a large extent, Luxembourg almost did it, Austria almost did it, Iceland almost certainly did it, Finland almost certainly did it, and Norway almost did it. Hooray.

“So we are really very close. There are European countries, one of which is very close to zero. Most of the other countries clearly state they want to reach zero. I haven’t mentioned it now.

However, Professor Staines revealed that even when the virus is effectively suppressed, small isolated outbreaks are still possible.

“I’m not perfect, so I’ll report a new case for a while, but it reduces it from a major crisis that cuts our entire economy to the right, to an important but manageable public health issue.

Professor Staines advocated a nationwide approach to tackling the virus, arguing that long lockdowns were not needed to crush the curve.

He said: “We’re out of blockade, we’re opening our economy, and now we’re saying we’re about to reach zero.

“We wear masks, test people at airports, do things like offensive testing and tracking, pass bans from our current location, and… To decide how to escape.

“We took an urgent response to the crisis, and that was right, I’m not criticizing it.

“But now is the time to take a closer look at these measures and think, “Well, this is really very important,” but “This is not so important.”
