HPAI found in birds in Pitkin County
This is the first case of a virus detected in Colorado.
Pitkin County, Colorado — United States Department of Agriculture National Veterinary Services Institute (NVSL) announced that a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus was detected in a herd in the backyard of Pitkin County.
The Colorado Veterinary Department has received reports from a Pequin County veterinarian that 35 of the 36 poultry in the herd have died, the Colorado Agricultural Department (CDA) said in a news release.
According to the CDA, the flock was known to have been exposed to sick waterfowl a few days ago. Authorities say a bird’s body was taken to the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Institute for testing. The remaining birds were euthanized and the farm was placed under quarantine.

The CDA said it is working with authorities to enhance surveillance and detection activities in Pitkin County.
