CDC studies show why it is needed after infection
Immunity from COVID-19 attacks may provide some protection against the virus, but new research suggests that it may not be enough to keep you away from the hospital.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has partnered with Epic Research. Share data to advance medicine and public health to determine how effective vaccines and boosts are against hospitalization for reinfection.
Researchers examined electronic health records of more than 50,000 patients with both delta and omicron waves that were COVID-19 positive more than three months after the last infection.
“People had good immunity from (the original strain of the virus) after first obtaining COVID, but wanted to see what the impact on public health would be after the delta period and the current Omicron period. “It was,” said the research author. Dr. Jackie Gerhart, Physician and Vice President of Clinical Computer Science at Epic Research.
During the delta wave, they found that the double-dose mRNA vaccine series was approximately 47% effective against reinfection hospitalization and booster immunization was more than 57% effective. According to a study published in the weekly morbidity and mortality report on Tuesday.
Recently, during the Omicron wave, the double dose series was about 34% effective and the booster immunization was almost 68% effective.
The takeaway is obvious, Gerhart said.
“If you have been infected with COVID before, vaccines and booster immunity can improve your immunity,” she said. “We have tools that help reduce the chances of being re-infected and hospitalized.”
Findings suggest that boosters are less effective against deltas than Omicron, The authors of the study state that it may be due to the timing of the study. Data was collected during the delta wave shortly after the booster was approved, and people may not have had time to develop the intended level of protection.

Information from the Omicron wave is especially important, according to health experts, as its cousin BA.2 was involved in more than 85% of new coronavirus cases last week. CDC data shows.
Dr. Resette Cardona, chair of the Infectious Diseases Division at Martin Health’s Cleveland Clinic Florida, said the BA.2 variant may be a bit more contagious, but behaves much like the original Omicron variant. is.
“Since the beginning of the pandemic, vaccines have been effective in preventing serious illnesses, regardless of strain,” she said. “I hope it will be the same for different strains of Omicron.”
According to USA TODAY’s analysis, cases have increased by about 20% nationwide compared to two weeks ago, with about 30 states reporting an upward trend. Data from Johns Hopkins University. The country averages about 3,600 COVID deaths a week.
Most of the states experiencing the largest increase are in the northeastern part of the country. Philadelphia announced on Monday As a result of the increase in incidents, we plan to reinstate Mask’s obligations next week, making it the first city to do so this spring.
Jody Guest, a professor and vice chairman of the Department of Epidemiology at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, said:
A total of more than 80 million COVID-19 cases have been reported since the pandemic began, and more Americans will be re-infected with the virus. More than ever, health experts say it’s important to stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines and boosters to reduce the risk of hospitalization.
“We expect a reinfection to occur,” Cardona said. “Eligible people need to be vaccinated, whether or not they have been infected before …. Get the best protection during this time.”
