Middlesex County reported 3,902 additional COVID-19 cases this week
Another surge?
New cases of coronavirus surged last week in both middlesex counties and throughout the state. This is due to the establishment of new and highly contagious mutations.
Middlesex County reported 3,902 new cases last week, according to a USA TODAY network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. This is an increase of 42.1% from the 2,745 cases reported a week ago. Six deaths were reported last week, up from the previous week to four. Through the pandemic, the county reported 331,797 cases and 3,961 deaths.
The increase across the state was even more rapid, with new cases of the virus causing COVID-19 increasing by 51.7% to 14,469. Thirty-three people were reported dead from COVID-19 during the week ending on Sunday, up from the 28 deaths reported the previous week.
As the BA.2 omicron subvariant (which is believed to be even more contagious than its predecessor) becomes the predominant strain, viral infections and hospitalizations are increasing again.
In Worcester County, 1,280 new cases were reported last week, an increase of 61.6% from 792 reported last week. Four people died last week, but not last week.
Norfolk County also reported 1,375 new cases last week, up 42.5% from a total of 965 last week. Five deaths were reported last week, but not the previous week.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts is currently ranked third in the country for the fastest per capita epidemic of the coronavirus. Nationally, cases actually decreased by 10% last week.
With 2.1% of the country’s population, Massachusetts currently has 6.4% of the country’s cases. Nationwide, 31 states had more cases than last week than last week.
Within Massachusetts, the worst weekly outbreak per person was in Hampshire County, with 287 cases per 100,000 people per week. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Suffolk County, high-level community infections begin at 100 per 100,000 people per week.
Weekly cases increased in 12 counties from the previous week, with the largest increase from the previous week’s pace in Middlesex, Suffolk, and Worcester counties.

Massachusetts is the second largest in the country in terms of the proportion of people who have been vaccinated at least once, and 97.7% of the population is at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 77.3%, as shown by USA TODAY analysis of CDC data. The most used Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in the United States should be given twice at intervals of several weeks.
In Massachusetts, a total of 1,724,369 people have been coronavirus-positive and 20,176 have died from the disease since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, 80,632,301 are positive and 988,618 are dead.

Hospitals in 22 states reported more COVID-19 patients than they did a week ago, while hospitals in 15 states reported more COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit.
