united nations health The agency said late Saturday that it had received at least 169 reports of “acute hepatitis of unknown cause” from 12 countries so far.
Cases were reported in children aged 1 month to 16 years, and 17 sick people required liver transplants. WHO does not say in which country the death occurred.
The first case was recorded in the United Kingdom and 114 children became ill.
“It is not yet clear whether the number of cases of hepatitis has increased or whether there has been increased awareness of cases of hepatitis that occur at expected rates but are not detected,” WHO said in a statement.
According to experts, these cases may generally be associated with a cold-related virus, but further research is underway.
“Adenovirus is a possible hypothesis, but investigation into the causative agent is underway,” WHO said, noting that the virus was detected in at least 74 cases. At least 20 children tested positive for the coronavirus.
WHO said affected countries are increasing monitoring of hepatitis cases in children.
