National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Recommended The fifth COVID-19 mRNA is ImmunodeficiencyIncludes many people with cancer or a history of cancer.
The group explained that the fifth shot of the mRNA vaccine represents a second booster because the primary mRNA immunization series for individuals with weakened immunity includes three doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.
The update issued today is from NCCN’s Advisory Committee on COVID-19 Vaccination and Pre-Exposure Prevention, which published the first vaccine guidelines for cancer patients in January 2021. Since then, the NCCN has published numerous updates as information about the virus. Vaccines have evolved.

The Latest iteration The NCCN’s COVID guidelines include up-to-date information for patients who first received the Johnson & Johnson single-shot vaccine. This includes recommendations for patients to inoculate both the first and second boosters with the mRNA vaccine.
The group also updated the recommended dose for pre-exposure prophylaxis with the combination of tixagebimab and cilgavimab (EvusheldAstraZeneca), suggests 300 mg of each monoclonal antibody instead of 150 mg, based on in vitro activity against the Omicron variant.
The group noted that Moderna shots and Pfizer shots could be exchanged for boosters.
“The NCCN Committee considers both homogenous and heterogeneous boosters to be a good choice,” the expert wrote.
