First Wisconsin Mammals-Three Baby Foxes

Madison, Wisconsin (WMTV)-Three foxes in Wisconsin have been infected with a subspecies of bird flu, killing millions of birds throughout the state.
The Department of Natural Resources reported the discovery on Friday, saying researchers had never found a strain that jumps to mammals in Wisconsin. Infected foxes were previously found in Minnesota, Michigan, Canada, and Europe.
Lindsey Long, a DNR wildlife veterinarian, has shown that wild red fox kits may have been infected with the virus after eating infected birds. She added that there is little evidence that foxes are the main cause of the spread of bird flu.
“We know that certain species of wild birds, such as waterfowl and birds of prey, are most likely to be affected by this HPAI virus,” Long said.
Officials have pointed out that the bird flu strain, H5N1, has not been found in domestic dogs or cats. Authorities require that anyone who sees a pet in contact with an animal exhibiting neurological symptoms should contact the health department or veterinarian.
The neurological symptoms of mammals include:
- Walking around, walking in a circle,
- Unbalanced posture,
- Show head and body tremors
DNR encourages people to stay away from wild mammals that appear to be sick or injured.
Millions of birds have already been killed, most of them inhabiting Jefferson, as authorities tried to stop the spread of the virus. So far, the Agricultural Trade and Consumer Protection Agency has recorded cases in 11 counties throughout the state.
For now, agencies encourage poultry owners to continue strict biosecurity protocols and keep their herds indoors as much as possible.
On Tuesday, state officials banned poultry of all kinds from being taken to live events in Wisconsin to strengthen safety measures designed to contain highly pathogenic avian influenza. Orders have been expanded to replace those inherited earlier last month that imposed restrictions only on poultry.
Officials have shown that it is effective up to 30 days after the last recorded case of the virus in a domestic herd. The list of banned events includes shows, exhibitions and swap meet.
