EU working on joint purchase of monkeypox vaccine
Brussels (AFP)-The EU is working to centralize the purchase of monkeypox vaccines and treatments, details will be agreed “in the next few days”, the European Commission said on Thursday (May 26). I told AFP.
Promotion through the Commission’s Health Emergency and Preparedness Authority (Hera) occurs when EU disease agencies have stated that the number of human monkeypox cases worldwide has reached 219 in the current spread.
The UK, a former EU member state, has the largest number of cases with 71 cases. This was followed by EU countries with 59 and Portugal with 37.
“Hera is actually working with member countries and manufacturers to procure monkeypox vaccines and treatments,” Stefan DeKeersmaecker, a spokesman for the Health Commission, told AFP.
Twenty-seven EU countries have agreed that Hera will procure jabs on their behalf “as soon as possible,” he added.
“But I can’t comment on any of the numbers,” he said.
The EU has already played a central role as coordinator and pre-purchaser for billions of Covid vaccines for member states, but De Keersmaecker said the monkeypox situation is different.
The deployment of the monkeypox vaccine is “limited to very specific cases because the virus’s infectivity and risk are not comparable to Covid,” he said.
The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) said in a statement Thursday that the number of cases has increased five-fold from a week ago, but the risk of infection remains “very low.”
Cases of monkeypox are endemic in several countries in West Africa and Central Africa and are currently detected in nearly 20 countries around the world, including the United States, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, and 11 EU countries.
Many cases are associated with men having sexual intercourse with men, but experts said there was no evidence that it was a sexually transmitted disease.
Rather, it seems to be transmitted by close contact with an infected person who has blisters on the skin.
Symptoms are similar to smallpox, but less severe and most people recover within 3-4 weeks.
