New studies show a significant reduction in AAPI cancer screening during a pandemic
Honolulu (HawaiiNewsNow)-A new study shows that a COVID pandemic can have a significant impact on Hawaii’s cancer incidence, especially among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
These groups make up about half of Hawaii’s population. They are also people who have avoided cancer screening, according to a new report published Friday at the Journal of the American Medical Association.
“The CDC actually calls and asks,” Did you complete the screening last year? ” We also found that within the AAPI population, the number of people who reported having a mammogram decreased by about 27%, “said Dr. Arifkamal, Chief Patient Officer of the American Cancer Society.
Organizations are particularly concerned about the decline. In 2018, about two-thirds of Asian American and Pacific Islander women were screened for breast cancer, according to a survey.
“After the pandemic began, it was less than half, or about 46%. This is the most dramatic reduction in cancer screening, especially in any population in the United States, from our data. And that’s it. It’s pretty disturbing, “Kamar said.
Especially in states like Hawaii, the proportion of Asians and Pacific Islanders is high.
When the pandemic first began, many screenings were canceled when the healthcare system reduced selective treatment, and patients withdrew due to COVID concerns.
“Mammograms and colonoscopy require you to go to the medical system and perform the procedure,” says Kamal. “I think it’s really hesitant to start emphasizing. I think it makes perfect sense during COVID,” Kamal said.
But now, healthcare providers have new testing and masking rules to encourage people to keep up with cancer screening. Otherwise?
“In other words, in the future, more cancers may be difficult to cure and more cancer deaths may occur. This is something we want to avoid.”
There are no firm figures for that yet, but early estimates suggest that cancer mortality can increase by up to 10%.
