Nine Stanford Medical Scientists Receive a Total of $ 13 Million in Cancer Research Funds | News Center
Nine Stanford medicine Scientists are one of the recipients of large grants from Gun Grand Challenge, A global funding initiative established by the National Cancer Institute and the British Cancer Research Fund. Funding was announced on June 16th.
Scientists at Stanford University will receive about $ 13 million over the next five years to tackle various problems in cancer research. The funding is part of the $ 100 million provided to four teams of researchers from institutions around the world. Each team works on a specific research topic. Researchers at Stanford University have contributed to three teams.
Study of extrachromosomal DNA
Paul Michel, MD, a professor of pathology and scholars at the Sarafan ChEM-H Institute will lead the study of extrachromosomal DNA. It consists of small circular genetic information that promotes tumor evolution and makes cancer in some individuals refractory to treatment. Extrachromosomal DNA is present in about one-third of cancers and promotes aggressive tumor behavior.
“We are ready to change the collective understanding of many aggressive cancer forms,” Michelle said. “We believe we can provide new insights into how to diagnose, monitor and treat patients for whom current treatments do not work.”

Next-generation immunotherapy
Four researchers at Stanford University are part of a team that develops next-generation immunotherapy for children with solid tumors. Because childhood cancer is biologically different from adult tumors, immunotherapeutic techniques designed for adult cancer often cannot help children. Researchers plan to use laboratory models specific to pediatric disease to design treatments specifically targeting pediatric tumors, focusing on cell surface markers and the local environment.

The team is headed by researchers at Children’s National Hospital (Washington, DC) and University College London, and includes scientists from eight institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, and France.
Early Cancer Investigation
Calvin KuoMD, PhD, Maureen Lyles D’Ambrogio Medical Professor, and Emma Landberg, Associate Professor of Biotechnology and Pathology, has joined the team investigating the very early stages of cancer development. Recent studies have shown that many cells with mutations that cause cancer never become malignant. Researchers plan to investigate that factors such as inflammation, aging, and exposure to carcinogens can lead these cells to the pathways that cause cancer. The team is headed by scientists at the University of California, San Francisco. WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer in France and Biomedical Research Institute in Spain. They will seek new ways to prevent cancer. The team includes scientists from five institutions: the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, and France.
