COVID infections in LA County rise above 800
The number of COVID-positive patients in Los Angeles County hospitals dropped to 209 in April and then exceeded 800 on Tuesday.
There are currently 807 COVID-positive patients in the county hospital, according to the latest state figures released on Tuesday. Of those patients, 68 are being treated in the intensive care unit.
On Saturday, the state reported 762 COVID-positive patients at a Los Angeles County hospital, and 76 were being treated in the intensive care unit.
According to Barbara Ferrer, director of public health at Los Angeles County, about 60% of COVID-positive patients were actually hospitalized for other reasons and tested positive for the virus during their stay.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the county reported more than 3,671 new COVID-19 cases and 9 additional deaths. The county reported 5,852 infections from Saturday, 4,761 from Sunday, and 3,110 on Monday.
The new cases bring the county to 3,105,867 cases and 32,316 deaths.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicators, the county may move to “high” levels of viral activity when the new hospitalization rate reaches 10 per 100,000 inhabitants.
County health officials believe that if rates continue, the county could reach the “high” category by mid-July.
If the county remains high for two weeks, a new indoor mask obligation will be imposed.
