Strokes are eight times more common with COVID than with influenza

Thursday, July 02, 2020 (HealthDay News)-While both influenza and COVID-19 can increase the risk of stroke, the odds of coronavirus appear to be eight times higher.

Researchers found that out of more than 1,900 patients with COVID-19, 1.6% had a stroke, while nearly 1,500 patients had 0.2% serious illness with influenza. ..

Dr. Neal Parikh, Assistant Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at Weil Cornell, said: New York City Medicine.

“Basically, our results support the idea that COVID-19 infections are more severe than influenza infections,” Parik added.

In this study, Parik and colleagues compared the incidence of stroke between COVID and influenza patients at two New York City hospitals. Patients with coronavirus were evaluated from March 4 to May 2, and researchers analyzed influenza data from January 1, 2016 to May 31, 2018.

Two neurologists who reviewed the findings were not surprised that COVID was associated with stroke.

Dr. Larry Goldstein, professor of neurology and professor of neurology at the university, said: In Kentucky.

COVID-19 disease is also associated with blood clots, which can increase the risk of stroke, he said.

Dr. Salman Azhar is the Head of Stroke at Lennox Hill Hospital in New York City. “The virus tends to cause some coagulation, which we believe is probably due to increased inflammation in the body.”

Azhar explained that COVID-19 attacks the cells lining the blood vessels. The virus also increases the production of coagulation factors, he said.

Antibodies are also involved in the development of stroke, Azhar said.

“There are antibodies we’ve known for a long time, not related to the virus, but we know that people at risk of stroke and other blood vessel thrombosis are at an increased risk. The incidence is high.” 19”.

Because of these risks, COVID-19 patients are being monitored for signs of coagulation. “In general, all patients with COVID-19 use low levels of anticoagulants to prevent blood clots,” Azhar said.

“Patients with blood clots receive higher doses of anticoagulants to prevent blood clots that can damage vital organs,” he said.

According to Azhar, both young and old COVID patients develop a blood clot and are at the highest risk of the disease.

Stroke may be the first sign of COVID-19 in some patients. In this study, more than a quarter of patients went to the emergency room because of a stroke and were later diagnosed with coronavirus.

Fortunately, only a small percentage of COVID-19 patients have strokes, Azhar said. Of the 1,916 patients infected with the virus in this study, 31 had a stroke. However, he said that post-stroke disability could be a permanent effect of the virus.

Goldstein, who works in Lexington, Kentucky, said that patients with COVID may not have the same risk of stroke in all parts of the country, as reported in New York.

“We don’t yet have one patient with both conditions, but the number of COVID-19s in our area is much lower than in New York,” he said. “Anyway, COVID-19 disease is clearly associated with a propensity for thrombus formation, and stroke should be considered a possible complication.”

The report was published online July 2 in the journal JAMA Neurology..
