Strokes are eight times more common with COVID than with influenza

In this study, Parik and colleagues compared the incidence of stroke between COVID and influenza patients at two New York City hospitals. Patients with coronavirus were evaluated from March 4 to May 2, and researchers analyzed influenza data from January 1, 2016 to May 31, 2018.
Two neurologists who reviewed the findings were not surprised that COVID was associated with stroke.

According to Azhar, both young and old COVID patients develop a blood clot and are at the highest risk of the disease.
Stroke may be the first sign of COVID-19 in some patients. In this study, more than a quarter of patients went to the emergency room because of a stroke and were later diagnosed with coronavirus.
Fortunately, only a small percentage of COVID-19 patients have strokes, Azhar said. Of the 1,916 patients infected with the virus in this study, 31 had a stroke. However, he said that post-stroke disability could be a permanent effect of the virus.
Goldstein, who works in Lexington, Kentucky, said that patients with COVID may not have the same risk of stroke in all parts of the country, as reported in New York.
“We don’t yet have one patient with both conditions, but the number of COVID-19s in our area is much lower than in New York,” he said. “Anyway, COVID-19 disease is clearly associated with a propensity for thrombus formation, and stroke should be considered a possible complication.”
