LA County confirms first human case of West Nile virus this year
Public health officials confirmed Thursday the first human case of West Nile virus this year in Los Angeles County.
The LA County Department of Public Health announced six confirmed cases in Antelope, San Fernando, and the San Gabriel Valley, with most patients hospitalized in late July and early August.
LA County has not reported any cases in Long Beach or Pasadena, which run their own public health agencies. Neither city has publicly reported any confirmed cases as of Thursday.
“This is a reminder that West Nile virus is active in Los Angeles County every year and that mosquito control is a shared responsibility,” said Leanne, district manager of Antelope Valley’s Mosquito and Vector Control District. Burdick said.
Last year, the county reported 17 West Nile cases, resulting in 12 hospitalizations and 1 death, down significantly from 93 cases, 79 hospitalizations and 7 deaths in 2020.
The county has recorded an average of 91 confirmed cases of West Nile over the past five years, but the actual number of cases is likely higher, as most people infected have mild or no symptoms. , no infected person has been reported.
Three-quarters of reported cases are associated with severe illness, and nearly 10% of patients with severe illness die from complications, according to LA County Public Health officials.
The announcement comes two weeks after the Orange County Health Department reported the first confirmed cases of the year.
West Nile virus is spread by mosquitoes found throughout LA County. Health officials are calling on adults, especially those over the age of 50, and those with chronic health conditions who are more susceptible to serious illness to take steps to protect themselves.
