New Zealand links hepatitis A Berry cases to EU illness
New Zealand officials investigating a case of hepatitis A linked to berries have identified a link to past outbreaks in Europe.
In New Zealand, 12 people have contracted hepatitis A from eating frozen berries. Eight were linked by genetic sequencing and were likely exposed to the same viral source.7 were hospitalized. Foodstuffs Own Brands has recalled various Pams brand frozen berry products due to possible links to hepatitis A cases. It has been removed from South Island Torrent and Rayward Fresh stores.
All batches and dates of the Pams brand are included in Mixed Berry 500 grams, Two Berry Mix 1 Kg and 750 grams, Smoothie Berry Mix 500 grams, and Raspberry 500 and 350 grams.
Vincent Arbuckle, deputy director of the New Zealand Food Safety Authority, said officials are asking people to check freezers for recalled products.
“People who have these products at home should not eat them raw. In the meantime, our advice to all consumers is to stay vigilant and take precautions by heat-treating frozen berries to kill viruses. It’s about taking extra precautions at home,” he said.

Suspicion falls on frozen berries from Serbia
The New Zealand virus is genetically identical to the virus that caused disease in Sweden in 2020 and 2021.
“The illness may have been linked to frozen Serbian berries. The recalled product contained Serbian berries, which most people who got sick reportedly ate. “By matching food histories reported by disease outbreaks and cases, we were able to identify the products that were recalled,” Arbuckle said.
“For frozen berries from imported sources, it is widely accepted that tracing disease to a specific product is a very difficult process. Twelve cases reported eating a variety of berries. In addition, hepatitis A has a long incubation period of up to 50 days after ingestion of the product before symptoms appear.”
Product testing by the Environmental Science Research Institute (ESR) has not yet confirmed hepatitis A virus.
Other frozen berry importers have put on hold products that can be traced to Serbia while investigations continue.
“These products are less relevant to the case and less Serbian berries. It’s a burden for them, but like us, they’ve put consumer safety first,” Arbuckle said.
Hepatitis A virus is inactivated by heating above 85 degrees C (185 degrees F) for 1 minute. Washing frozen berries does not kill the virus.
The virus is spread when someone ingests it through close contact with an infected person or through contaminated food or drink. Symptoms include inflammation of the liver, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, and yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin (jaundice).
