Redding, Pennsylvania – Flu season is upon us. The head of Reading Hospital’s Infectious Diseases Division said he expected a higher number of cases than in previous years.
“We’ve had very few cases in the last two years,” said Dr. Debra Powell. “Two years ago she had no flu cases in the area in 2021. Last year she had two.”
She says cases will start spreading soon as people socialize again, schools reopen and masks are in short supply. That’s why it’s best to get your flu shot now.
“You need to get it a few weeks before the season starts so it has a chance to produce antibodies,” Powell said, adding, “That’s why we encourage it in the fall, before the winter season starts.
She says COVID-19 has put the flu on the back burner, but it can be a serious illness for high-risk people.
“We announced a new vaccine combination this year, the same technology that we have always used. I recommend it,” Powell said.
She also expects COVID-19 cases to remain stable during flu season. A common question is how long after getting the flu shot until she gets a COVID-19 booster. Powell says you can take them at the same time or spaced them however you like, as long as you’re protecting yourself from both viruses.
“People can get their flu shots at their local pharmacy or GP,” she explained.
