Influenza, COVID-19 Cases Rise Nationwide

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — New alerts from federal health officials — Flu cases are at their highest level in a decade, and COVID-19 is on the rise. Part of this is related to the surge in infections after Thanksgiving, which has doctors worried about the rest of the holiday season.

Clinics and hospital emergency departments are flooded with sick people. Health officials say more people aren’t wearing masks and fluctuating vaccination coverage is partly to blame.

It’s been a brutal week for the Kao family, who are battling a nasty virus just like millions of Americans.

“It’s been very busy,” said his father, Brendan Kao.

This year’s respiratory virus season has been a complete storm of RSV, flu and COVID-19.

The flu is particularly bad right now. About 8.7 million people have fallen ill since October, 78,000 have been hospitalized, and her 4,500 people, including 14 children, have died from the flu.

“Flu hospitalizations continue to be the highest seen at this time of year in a decade,” said CDC Director Rochelle Wallenski, PhD.

The Pennsylvania flu is the best it’s been in eight years. The CDC influenza map shows high to very high cases across the Tri-State area.

Dr Claiborne Childs said: “What concerns us is that the number of infectious respiratory viruses is rising sharply and much earlier than would normally be expected.” said.

Dr. Claiborne Childs of Main Line Health’s Riddle Hospital said COVID-19 is also making a comeback.

Cases are increasing across the region. In Delaware, COVID-19 infections surged 39% over the past two weeks. Part of the expected post-Thanksgiving surge in respiratory infections.

“I think it’s hard to tell. It’s quite possible that when people are gathered together and their masks are off, there’s an increased risk of respiratory virus transmission between individuals,” Childs said.

Immunization is now important for flu and COVID-19 boosters.
