(WFSB) – Dog owners nationwide are grappling with an increase in canine flu cases.
It’s the same as what humans get.
There are many similarities in the symptoms, reactions and care of dogs infected with this virus.
It’s actually two viruses. They are very similar, with other states seeing higher rates of increase in cases, but not Connecticut and New England.
But that doesn’t mean dog owners shouldn’t be vigilant when caring for their animals.
“Common signs of canine flu are cough, runny nose, lethargy and fever,” says Dr. Heidi Morley, owner of Fenton River Animal Hospital. “Every dog is a little different. Many show no signs at all. Some show mild respiratory symptoms.”
Although it hasn’t reached dangerous levels yet, many dog owners weren’t even aware the virus existed.
“When you said that, I had no idea my first instinct was to leave the dog park. said.
“Good to know, I think I’ll still bring her here. I think I’ll still keep bringing her back to the park,” Rocky Hill’s Kelly Martin said.
Dr. Morley said the canine flu vaccine isn’t for all dogs, but for those who have or are likely to have the virus, a vaccine is a good idea.
“Young dogs and older dogs are more susceptible. If their immune systems are suppressed, they can get even worse,” Morley said.
Morey said dogs over the age of seven are the ones for which a vaccine may be the best option for avoiding the flu.
