As advanced prostate cancer rises, doctors encourage aggressive testing

However, an increasing number of men are being diagnosed with advanced late-stage prostate cancer.
“Since 2011, advanced-stage (local or distant) prostate cancer diagnoses have increased by 4% to 5% each year, and the proportion of men diagnosed with late-stage prostate cancer has doubled.” The Cancer Society press room said:
“There is nothing you can eat or drink to prevent prostate cancer. Only,” said Dr. Michael Selva, a radiation oncologist at San Antonio Cancer Center.
Cervical and lung cancers have seen significant improvements in mortality and diagnosis thanks to vaccines and changes in habits, but there is currently no preventative measure for prostate cancer.
This is an unfortunate fact for men like Phillip Bakke, who was diagnosed at age 55.
“It’s a completely treatable thing, especially if you catch it early. But if you don’t, it will cure you,” Bakke said.
Doctors now recommend annual prostate-specific antigen or PSA testing for men over the age of 50.
Bakke missed several tests because of the pandemic. In 2021, he was diagnosed with cancer, had his prostate removed and had radiation treatments.
“It’s a simple blood draw that can really save a lot of trouble down the road,” Bakke said.
Dr. Selva treated Bakke and said it’s important for men not only to push for an annual PSA test, but also to keep track of their numbers.
“If the PSA in the last five years was one year in ten years, this year it has tripled in three years. Something is happening,” Dr. Selva said.
Prostate cancer can be treated if detected early, but if detected late, it is unlikely to be cured.
“At some point, prostate cancer can no longer be cured. It becomes controllable. Dr. Selva said.
This is why Bakke encourages all men to test and act early.
“If you don’t catch it early, you really have a problem. And it’s really hard to play from behind. So no pun intended,” Bakke said.
The American Cancer Society is working to address inequality with a new initiative. impact – Together we will improve prostate cancer mortality by focusing community outreach on those most affected by prostate cancer.
The initiative will also fund new cancer research programs that connect laboratories and clinics to community members.
