University of Washington students create early detection test for endometriosis

According to the World Health Organization, endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women. This is a chronic, painful disease in which certain tissues grow outside the uterus. There’s no cure, but a group at the University of Washington hopes to come up with a way to detect endometriosis early, and FOX 13’s Nikki Torres tells us how.

Endometriosis patient Reem Shabha said, “I had to work from home for a few days because I could barely get out of bed in pain. It was then that I realized that I needed someone to believe me when I said I needed a plan.

For more than six years, Shabba has lived in pain and frustration.

“I went to the doctor every time I had my period,” Shabba said. “I will feel a terrible stabbing pain in my abdomen.”

Shabba said he continued to see doctors for his symptoms, but didn’t get the help he needed.

“I went to urgent care with 10/10 pain and was told, ‘Take some ibuprofen. There’s not much we can do for you.’

Sometimes she said she would tell the doctor what she thought she had. endometriosisbut they told her they didn’t believe it was the cause of her pain.

“I just think there’s a lack of knowledge in general or people just don’t take the symptoms seriously,” Shabba said. “So I’ve seen so many different doctors and providers that it’s really frustrating. I felt dismissed by them all until I got to my current provider.”

There is no cure for endometriosis. However, with proper treatment, symptoms can be controlled. Like many endometriosis patients, Shaba underwent surgery to remove the scar tissue and adhesions that caused her pain.

“To every provider who didn’t take my pain seriously, it was like, ‘I told you so, here’s the proof,'” Shabba said.

Shabba said the surgery changed her life. But if someone had found it sooner, she might have been spared years of suffering.

Currently at the University of Washington Group of 5 bioengineering students We are working to create a non-invasive device that can tell you if you have endometriosis. The project is called Endozene.

“Even I didn’t know anything about endometriosis before coming here,” said Jack Kussick, a master’s student working on Endozene. “Obviously, women’s health care is sometimes underestimated.”

Studies show that women take 8 to 12 years to be diagnosed. By then, the symptoms can get very bad. Kusick says that’s where their team saw a need.

It was clear that others recognized the need as well.

Endozene has a long way to go before it hits the market. For now they are raising awareness, Laying the groundwork for a prototype.
