An ambitious global study of type 2 diabetes has reached unequivocal conclusions. Seventy percent of all new cases each year may be diet-related, with three in particular playing the largest role in the development of metabolic disease.

The authors found that about 70% of new cases of type 2 diabetes each year, or about 14 million people worldwide, may be related to dietary factors.
However, three in particular stood out as having the highest correlation with new cases.
- Inadequate intake of whole grains
- Excessive consumption of white rice and wheat
- Excessive consumption of processed meat
More broadly, the authors grouped dietary factors into six ‘overfeeding’ categories and five ‘underfeeding’ groups, with overfeeding factors playing a much larger role than underfeeding factors. (about 61% of cases).
In other words, eating too much of the “bad stuff” was more of a problem than not eating enough of the “good stuff.”
