SLO County Offers Free MPOX Vaccines During Pride Month
In conjunction with June’s Pride celebrations, the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department is offering free MPOX vaccinations this month.
According to the CDC, gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men are at increased risk of contracting Mpox. It used to be called monkeypox.
It is an infection that causes fever and a painful rash through close or skin-to-skin contact.
San Luis Obispo County has reported just one case in the past 11 months. Dr. Rick Rosen of the SLO County Health Department says vaccination is essential to prevent the spread of mpox.
“Because this month is Pride Month, interest in mpox has increased across the country, and we are actively trying to push further vaccination,” Rosen said.
The virus can be severe and fatal for people with weakened immune systems or other infections such as HIV.
Vaccination is a series of 2 doses, with an interval of 4 weeks.
People can schedule an appointment to receive either vaccine free at a county public health clinic during June.
