INDIANAPOLIS — Insomnia may be significantly associated with increased number and duration of annual flu-like illnesses. Dr. Gary Garcia-Molina, Sleep Number Corp. senior principal scientist explains in SLEEP 2023 video.
Garcia-Molina and colleagues targeted Sleep Number customers from November 2021 to April 2022 to assess potential links between long-term insomnia and vulnerability to flu-like illness. conducted a study that The participant was asked to complete four of her surveys measuring self-reported insomnia through the Insomnia Severity Index score at her six-week intervals.
Over 3,100 people responded to at least three surveys and were included in the analysis. The researchers also looked at daily restful sleep duration, sleep latency and quality, sleep latency and quality in 2019 (pre-COVID-19) and 2021 to assess the probability of experiencing flu-like illness symptoms. Data were collected on heart rate, respiratory rate, and exercise level.
“What we found is that people with disorders like insomnia are more susceptible to illnesses like the flu,” said Garcia-Molina.
