Family says man’s hands and toes were amputated after one flea bite

SAN ANTONIO (GREY NEWS) – After a flea bite, a Texas man is now missing a hand and a toe.
Michael Kohlhoff, 35, believed he had flu-like symptoms until his legs went numb.
According to a GoFundMe post After being contacted by Kohlhoff’s family, Kohlhoff visited the emergency room on June 19 and was admitted to the ICU with septic shock.
Kohlhoff was diagnosed with typhus, an infectious disease spread to humans by fleas, lice and chiggers, according to family members.

Doctors amputated both of his hands on July 10, and on Thursday doctors amputated his toes and part of his foot, according to family posts.
According to his family, Kohlhoff is a handyman and art lover whose passion is all about working with his hands.

The CDC says there is no vaccine to prevent flea-borne typhus. The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid contact with fleas, such as keeping fleas away from pets, avoiding contact with wild animals, and using repellent when spending time outdoors.
