Additional £1.9 billion in funding for Scotland’s Covid response

This announcement was made before Steve Berkeley visited Edinburgh.
The Scottish government will receive an additional £1.9 billion in funding to combat the coronavirus, the British government said.
The delegated government is guaranteed to receive at least £3.7 billion this year.
This figure includes £1.2 billion in Wales and £600 million in Northern Ireland.
The Scottish government said the British government’s announcement would amount to about £800 million in new funding for Scotland.
An additional £1.1bn reflected the earlier announcement by the British government of the Scottish Government’s PPE funding and funding to prepare for the NHS in the winter.
Treasury chief secretary Stephen Berkeley said the money would help prepare for a future anti-corona virus plan.
He made a presentation before visiting Edinburgh.
The Treasury said the guaranteed funds would total at least £12.7 billion given to the administration delegated in 2020/21 to help the recovery of the coronavirus.

Before the visit, Berkeley said:
“That’s exactly what we did.
“Today, we are taking a step further by giving the decentralized governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland the additional certainty needed to plan its own support scheme over the coming months.
“This is another sign of our support for unions and commitments to ensure economic recovery across the UK.”

Kate Forbes, Secretary of Finance of Scotland, uses a meeting with Mr. Berkeley and his counterparts in Wales and Northern Ireland to call for an urgent decision on Scotland’s new financial power.
Forbes said: “Unlike the Scottish Government, we welcome the increased financing packages offered by the British Government, while recognizing that we have the necessary debt rights to respond to a crisis such as the Coronavirus.
“This provides essential support to combat the impact of Covid-19 on Scotland. But Covid’s dual economic impact and EU transition period.”
The Scottish Government has extended the repayment period from 5 years to a maximum of 10 years and is seeking the ability to borrow up to £500 million.
It also demanded the power to redistribute the lacking capital to day-to-day spending and the flexibility to raise reserves by raising the limit to £220 million.
Due to increased spending to tackle Covid-19, the Scottish Government’s overall budget for fiscal 2020-21 has exceeded £52bn from its previous estimate of £495.2bn.
