Minnesota issues new alerts for severe lung injury associated with vaping

On Friday, 24 July, the ministry alerted state-wide health care providers in Minnesota about about 11 suspicious cases of severe lung injury associated with vaping.

The incident occurred in June and July in Minnesota between the ages of 14 and 46, according to a news release. All 11 were hospitalized and some required intensive care, including ventilatory support with ventilator support.

MDH’s epidemiologist and dean of medicine, Dr. Ruth Lynfield, said at the forum that he couldn’t pinpoint where the new cases had occurred. Most were in the Twin Cities metro area, but “not all,” she said.

Symptoms are similar to those of COVID-19, making the diagnosis of suspected vaping-related injuries more difficult.

Jan Malcolm of the Minnesota Health Commission is encouraged to use the state’s free Quit Partner resources to help stop vaping as these cases are being investigated.

The occurrence of vaping-related lung injury was first detected in Minnesota in August 2019, with cases peaking in September and October. At the end of the state’s emergency response earlier this year, 149 confirmed or estimated cases and 3 deaths in Minnesota were identified.

Neil Schalbat, head of a tobacco prevention and control program in North Dakota, said there were zero lung damages associated with vaporization at the end of January, which was zero in the state.
