Ottawa parents move children out of nursery after outbreak

Some parents in Ottawa have decided to keep their children out of the nursery amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases and the explosive outbreak in daycare facilities over the past week.

On July 20, adults and children tested positive at the Pinecrest-Queensway Community Center facility on Ahern Avenue. That day, staff at La Clémentine Michel Dupuis in Manotick also showed a positive reaction.

The third outbreak was declared on July 24, at La Netasse Daycare at La Cite College, after a staff member became infected with the virus.

As part of the Ontario Stage 3 Resume Plan, the Ottawa nursery has been able to increase the size of individual groups on the premises from Monday to a maximum of 15 people (including staff and children). There is a long list of requirements that children, parents and staff must meet in order to access the day care center.

However, these precautions have not persuaded some parents.

Natalia Rodriguez said she discharged two children aged 1 and 6 from home daycare after a surge in COVID-19 last week in Ottawa.

“It’s a challenge, it’s definitely a juggling act,” said a lawyer who works at home, like her husband.

Rodriguez said it was the right decision for the family, despite the obstacles of having both childcare and working from home at the same time.

“Everyone has different risk assessments. Everyone has different medical profiles that make them more or less weak, and everyone has different priorities that they are trying to manage for their families. She said.

“Our priority is to keep everyone healthy, but others have other priorities.”

According to a city report released in September 2019, Ottawa has over 33,000 licensed childcare spaces, most of which are provided at 313 daycare centers. Over 3,400 of these spots are in 859 licensed homecare centers operated by 15 different providers.

“Not just temperature check”

Gina Bernard has three children aged 2, 4, and 6. He said that sending her to a nursery, kindergarten or first grade was not a risk that the family would be willing to accept at this stage.

“There is no situation where it would be okay without some kind of vaccine or very effective treatment,” she said.

Bernard said he would be willing to send the child to a daycare center if there was a way to test the child or adult before they entered the nursery.

“It’s not just a temperature check,” she said.

Bernard said her family was looking for a part-time nanny to share with another family bubbling the service. She also decided to educate her children at home.

“It’s a privilege,” she said. “We both can work from home and I really appreciate it, so I can afford this. I don’t know how parents without these options manage. “

“It was a difficult decision”

Stella Yuen decided to send her oldest children to the nursery when the facility was reopened this summer, not convinced they had enough lead time to do it safely. I said I resisted.

“It was a difficult decision,” she said.

Yuen said he would like to send a three and a half year old daughter to school and a one year old son to a nursery in the fall, but plans could change if things get worse.

“if [COVID-19] The case really explodes. It will need to be re-evaluated at that time. “

Yuen said having children at home is not ideal because they grow them up in a social environment with other children and participate in activities led by qualified early childhood educators.

“I really want everyone in Ottawa to do their part to keep the infections of the community low. We really do it five days a week, when kids go back to school and I need to be able to go to day care,” she said.

“It’s important for so many reasons, whether it’s a fair reason for women to get back to work. [or] For the development of children. I really just want everyone to play my part.”

According to Ottawa Public Health, 40 infants had COVID-19 during the first four months of the pandemic.

Gina Bernard, Stella Yuen, and Natalia Rodriguez say they aren’t currently ready to go to the nursery, despite the difficulties of keeping their children at home. 1:22
