Devon's free condom scheme amid rising number of sexually transmitted infections
Getty ImagesA new health scheme in Devon is to provide free condoms to people under the age of 25 after an increase in people being diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Devon saw a 40% increase in new cases between 2021 and 2022, while Torbay saw an 86% increase over the same period.
Condoms, dams and lubricants are now available free of charge to young people under the age of 25.
Torbay City Council, named Doink, said the scheme would “promote condom use and improve sexual health”.
The council said increased testing following the pandemic had revealed an increase in the incidence of sexually transmitted infections, particularly chlamydia.
The council said analysis of data from the Department of Health Improvement and Inequalities showed that the number of new infections in Devon rose from 368 per 100,000 people in 2021 to 515 per 100,000 people in 2022, an increase of 40%. He said it was clear.
In Torbay, the number of new sexually transmitted disease infections increased from 359 per 100,000 people in 2021 to 668 per 100,000 people in 2022, an increase of 86%.

Dr Vanessa Appea, NHS sexual health consultant, said: 'With sexually transmitted infections on the rise, it's vitally important to keep yourself and your partner safe when you're sexually active.

He added that he hoped the scheme would “normalize condom use” among young people.
Doink is run by sexual health testing service Preventx and sexual health charity The Eddystone Trust, which provides free HIV testing.
The service can be accessed through the Doink website or app, and contraceptives can be collected from collection points or dropped off in the post, Dr. Appiah added.
