Endometriosis patients talk about pain and how they were diagnosed
TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa General Hospital is raising awareness to better care for women suffering from: endometriosis.
In conjunction with Endometriosis Awareness Month, TGH will be hosting a free screening of the film “.below the belt” features inspiring stories about four women who advocate for themselves. This event is Tampa General Hospital Women's Institute.
This work focuses on raising community awareness about the disease, its symptoms, the patient's lifelong struggle, and treatment options that may help improve quality of life.
Deborah Onetti battled pain for almost 20 years.
“Just urinating was like giving birth. It was really painful,” Onetti said of the pain she experienced every day.
“In just one position, something almost killed me on my stomach,” she said of driving.
The cause of the pain went undiagnosed for almost 20 years.
“Over the years, after many tests, many hospitalizations, many visits to the emergency room, we couldn't find anything,” Onetti said. “They even sent me to psychology, thinking it was all in my head. Of course, I was also anxious because I was in pain every day.”
Dr. Emad Mikhail, chief gynecologist at Tampa General Hospital and associate professor and chair of gynecology at USF Health Morsani School of Medicine, ultimately diagnosed Onetti with endometriosis.
“There is no formal screening method for endometriosis,” Mikhail says. “So far, ultrasound is not an approved screening tool. In fact, the only way is to listen to patients and take their complaints seriously.”
Mikhail also added, “Yes.” There is no cure for endometriosis.
Onetti's severe symptoms required extensive surgery.
“It was in my colon, my bladder, my vagina,” she said.
She hopes sharing her story will help other women. Medical professionals know both personally and professionally the importance of proper diagnosis.
“I didn't give up. It's not good to be in pain, so I went to the doctor and ordered more tests to try to find the cause,” Onetti said.
Mikhail said treatment using a multidisciplinary care team approach yields better results. He stressed that more funding is needed for research into this complex disease.
While Onetti recovers from surgery, he's getting back to doing the things he loves, like working out.
“I feel like I can do a lot of things again and I feel like I'm alive again,” Onetti said.
