A deadly bacteria likes the taste of human blood, according to a new study. A Washington State University (WSU) team discovered a phenomenon known as “bacterial blood sucking,” in which bacteria are attracted to the liquid part of blood, or serum. Such properties are also found in bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli that cause food poisoning, the study further said. The study aims to understand why these microbes are able to move so deftly from the gut to the bloodstream where they can be deadly.

This study journal e-life.

“We found that some of the bacteria that most commonly cause bloodstream infections can actually sense chemicals in human blood and swim toward them,” said WSU School of Veterinary Medicine professor and study author. says Arden Beylink. Said NBC News.

The researchers found that the bacteria seemed particularly attracted to serine, an amino acid found in human blood that is also a common ingredient in protein drinks.

For the study, the researchers simulated intestinal bleeding by injecting tiny amounts of human serum and watched the bacteria move toward the source. It took him less than a minute for the microorganism to find the serum.

Researchers have also discovered that bacteria like Salmonella have special receptors on their surfaces that allow them to detect certain chemicals in human blood.

“Knowing how these bacteria are able to detect blood sources may allow us in the future to develop new drugs that block this ability,” said WSU doctoral student and lead author of the study. Sienna Glenn told the magazine.

The bacteria the researchers used in their study is called a multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae pathogen, which the World Health Organization (WHO) considers a “priority pathogen.” These pathogens belong to a group of 12 bacterial families considered the most serious threats to human health due to antibiotic resistance, WHO said.
