Overcoming baby blues with the world's first postpartum pill
(WNDU) – The birth of a baby is usually considered one of the happiest times in a woman's life, but that's not true for all new moms.
One in seven mothers experiences feelings of sadness, worthlessness, guilt, and even suicidal thoughts.
Postpartum depression (PPD) is on the rise. The CDC found that the rate of depression diagnosed at birth was seven times higher in 2015 than in 2000.

Suicide accounts for approximately 20% of postpartum deaths and is the leading cause of maternal death in the United States. That's why the first two FDA-approved PPD drugs are literally lifesavers.
“The idea that we can improve people's symptoms in a matter of days or weeks is extremely important in this very sensitive and urgent time frame,” said Leah Patterson, a psychiatrist at the University of North Carolina. .
The first drug, Zurresso, requires hospitalization and is administered through an IV over 60 hours. Now, the FDA has approved Zurzvae, a pill that new moms can take at home for 14 days.
“I often see people whose mood has changed dramatically and who initially don't tell me anything about their family or baby, but then end up showing me pictures after they get their IV drip.” says Patterson.
Brooke chose the IV version. Within the first 24 hours…
“I don't know, I was so hopeful, but I didn't feel any sadness for probably 48 hours,” she said.
And now Brooke is back as an active, engaged, and loving mother to Piper, Cole, and Maeve.
These two drugs are the first to specifically treat postpartum depression. Data suggests that up to 95% of women do not achieve remission because their PPD is either unrecognized or inadequately treated.
