Mpox is on the rise in Los Angeles County: Here's how to avoid it
The number of new MPOX cases in Los Angeles County has increased significantly over the past two weeks, local health officials announced Monday.
The “concerning increase” in the disease has seen reported cases rise from a weekly average of less than two, which had remained steady for several weeks, to a total of 10 in the county over the past two weeks.
The virus, formerly known as monkeypox, spreads through “close contact with bodily fluids, wounds, shared bedding and clothing, and respiratory droplets,” according to the county health department. A multi-country outbreak that began in May 2022 led to the declaration of a public health emergency by the U.S. and the World Health Organization. Cases have since declined thanks to vaccines and treatments..
Like COVID-19, MPOX can spread by droplet transmission, especially when an infected person kisses another person or coughs or sneezes in close proximity.
Symptoms of the virus include “a rash on the face, body or genitals or unusual sores that look like pimples or blisters,” as well as “fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and swollen lymph nodes.”

- Vaccination, especially for people in risk groups
The statement said anyone with symptoms should get tested and health workers should report any suspected cases to the Ministry of Health.
Many of the prevention tips issued by the county are standard safe-sex practices, such as using condoms and exchanging contact information with sexual partners.
The statement said the two-dose vaccine, Zynneos, recommended by county health officials, is the best way to prevent the spread of the virus.
While the vaccine is available to everyone, it is “strongly recommended” for certain subgroups who are particularly at risk of contracting MPOX, namely transgender people, people who engage in “commercial and/or transactional sex activities,” and people with HIV.
The county said partners of the people listed above are also at particular risk.
