With the Fourth of July approaching, many people will be spending time at pools and beaches, and according to recent reminders from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Cleveland Clinic, sun protection is especially important for people with several risk factors for skin cancer.
The six highest risk factors are light skin, use of tanning beds, working or playing in the sun, family history, history of sunburn, and irregularly shaped moles.
Dr. Elisabeth Muennig shared what everyone should know:
“We talk about A, B, C, D, and E. If you look at a mole, if it's a perfect brown circle, it's usually not a problem, but if it looks very jagged on one side and it's asymmetrical, that's a concern. Look at the borders. If it's very rough, that's a concern. Look at the color. Multiple colors are not good. If it's one uniform color and it matches all your other moles, it's usually not a problem. But if it's a little bit jagged, that's a concern. D is the diameter. If it's larger than the size of a pencil eraser, you probably want to look into that. And E was added for evolution. If it's changing over time, that's something to consider,” says Dr. Munnich, president and CEO of the Dermatology and Skin Care Association.
She is also one of the few practitioners currently in the country using a kinder, gentler method to remove skin cancer before it progresses beneath the skin's surface, a non-surgical alternative to other methods called IG-SRT.
“This is a superficial beam. It treats the skin cancer in about 30 seconds. It requires multiple visits, but it slowly removes the tumor over about six to eight weeks,” Dr. Munnich said.
To receive this treatment, patients must be definitively diagnosed with skin cancer and treatment must be localized, which is why it is important to have moles or skin changes checked early. In most cases, the procedure is covered by a person's medical insurance, but patients may need to get prior approval.
