Cases of human plague discovered in Colorado
Pueblo, Colorado.KKTV/Gray News) – Public health officials are investigating a case of human plague in Colorado based on preliminary test results.
Health officials said the plague bacteria can be transmitted by fleas and wild rodents. The disease occurs naturally and can affect humans and pets.
Common ways to become infected with plague are through the bite of an infected flea, touching an infected animal (prairie dogs, squirrels, rats, or rabbits), or inhaling droplets coughed up by an infected person or animal.
Common symptoms of plague include sudden fever and chills, severe headache, muscle pain, nausea, and vomiting.
Health officials said plague can be treated with antibiotics, but those infected need to be treated quickly to avoid serious complications or death.
Common forms of plague include bubonic, septicemic and pneumonic, but health officials have not said which form was found in the pueblo.
Health officials listed several ways people can protect themselves and their pets from the plague.
- Eliminate places where rodents can hide or breed around your home, garage, shed, or recreational areas: Remove brush, rock piles, trash, and wood piles.
- Avoid contact with dead animals. If you must handle a sick or dead animal, follow these guidelines:
- First, apply insect repellent to protect them from fleas, then use a long-handled shovel to put it in a garbage bag, and finally, place the bag in an outdoor trash can.
- To prevent flea bites, use an insect repellent that contains 20% to 30% DEET. Apply it to pants, socks, the tops of shoes, arms, and legs.
- Do not let pets sleep in the bed.
- Treat your dogs and cats for fleas regularly. Flea collars have not been proven to be effective.
- Do not allow your pet to hunt or roam in rodent habitats, such as prairie dog colonies.
- Store pet food in rodent-proof containers.
