H5N1 virus identified in five new dairy herds and more cats in US
The United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today added five dairy farms in three states to its list of confirmed cases of avian H5N1 influenza.
APHIS also confirmed the virus in three additional cats in two states where H5N1 outbreaks are occurring in dairy cattle and poultry.
The number of confirmed dairy cows has increased to 145.
Most of APHIS confirmation These detections were initially announced by individual states. The new cases include three in Colorado, one in Michigan, and one in Texas, bringing the total number of cases reported by the USDA to 145 in 12 states.
The Minnesota State Animal Health Commission report The new infections occurred in a dairy herd in Benton County in the central part of the state, bringing to eight reported cases of H5N1 infection on dairy farms in Minnesota to date.

Meanwhile, APHIS said the Michigan cat sample was taken on April 18 and was from Ottawa County, one of 10 Michigan counties affected by the dairy outbreak, and reported that H5N1 virus was detected in a raccoon in Ottawa County that was sampled on the same day as the cat.
In addition, APHIS report Four more cases of H5N1 have been detected in wild birds in two Iowa counties, all collected by officials in mid- to late June. The birds that tested positive were from Plymouth and Sioux counties and included a blackbird, a robin, a turkey vulture and a swallow.
