Whooping cough cases on the rise in Kentucky
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Whooping cough, known for sudden, violent coughing fits, is on the rise in Kentucky, local doctors and the Kentucky Department of Health say.
Suman Shekhar of Bowling Green Medical Center has seen the increase firsthand.
“(Pertussis) is a bacterial infection of the respiratory system that can cause pneumonia, cough, cold and fever,” Shekhar said.
according to Department of Health and Family ServicesThere have been 130 cases reported so far this year, a number not seen in seven years and an increase from last year.
“Last year, in 2023, there were 84 cases in Kentucky,” Shekar said.
At least eight of the 130 cases this year have resulted in hospitalization. Shekar said one reason for the increase in whooping cough cases in Kentucky is a drop in vaccination rates. 91% of kindergarteners and 85% of first-year middle schoolers Have received the necessary vaccinations.
“Unvaccinated people and those with weak immune systems are more susceptible,” Shekhar said.
Additionally, whooping cough is generally more contagious than other diseases, creating opportunities for infection to spread.
“Patients remain infectious for three to four weeks,” Shekhar said.
Shekhar said there are simple ways to avoid the disease, including getting vaccinated, washing your hands frequently and wearing a mask if you're sick.
