Whooping cough cases surge in Southeast Alaska

Health officials in southeast Alaska say they're seeing an increase in cases of whooping cough, commonly known as pertussis, in Juneau.

Last week, the City and Borough of Juneau and the Juneau School District sent press releases to residents and students about the increase in reported cases.

Public Health's southeast regional nursing director Sarah Hargrave said 14 cases of the highly contagious respiratory illness have been reported in the region since July and the number of cases continues to rise.

“We've seen an increase in cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, across the state,” Hargrave said, “Since the summer, we've seen an increase primarily in other parts of the state, but starting around mid-summer, we started to see a trickle of cases trickle into the Southeast and have continued to see a surge in cases.”

The number of infected people is also increasing Statewide More than 200,000 people have been infected with the coronavirus in Alaska and across the country, according to the state and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 165 cases have been reported in Alaska since January, but there have been fewer than 30 so far in 2023.

Charlie Gribbon, an infection preventionist at Bartlett Regional Hospital, said that's why it's important to get vaccinated and take precautions if you develop symptoms.

“Vaccination is an important part of overall health, along with getting enough sleep, getting enough nutrition, staying well hydrated,” Gribbon said. “It helps prime your immune system, so it's all part of it.”

This bacterial infection is most dangerous for infants and toddlers under the age of one, and even more so for people with underlying conditions such as asthma. If detected early, it can be treated with antibiotics.
