Mobile phones don't cause brain tumors: WHO study
“We've been discussing this issue for the past 30 years,” he said.
“There have been a lot of studies in the past with conflicting conclusions, so it's important to combine all the evidence so people know what's really going on.”
Karipidis said project researchers analyzed 63 of the most relevant studies for each cancer indication and found no higher risk.
“There is no evidence to suggest a link between cell phone use and brain tumors, or any other head and neck cancer,” he said.
“We also didn't find any association with long-term use – that is, if people use mobile phones for 10 years or more, we didn't find an association. We also didn't find any association with the amount of mobile phone usage – the number of calls people make or the time they spend on the phone.”
Study co-author Mark Elwood, emeritus professor of cancer epidemiology at the University of Auckland, said the findings were made with “moderate confidence”, the highest assessment available for studies without access to clinical trials.
He said the study couldn't answer questions about unusual exposure to mobile phones or rare cancers because of a lack of research, and that its findings applied to 3G and 4G networks.
“There hasn't been any extensive research yet into 5G networks, but there has been research into radar, which has similar high frequencies,” Ellwood said.
“These do not indicate an increased risk.”
Rohan Mate, a research scientist at ARPANSA who managed the organisation's “Speak to a Scientist” programme, said the findings should encourage and reassure people about their safety.
“We hope this will be another way to reassure them that they are safe. [and] “I hope it can help ease some of the anxiety around interacting with technology,” he said.
