Time to think about a flu shot

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Fall is fast approaching and flu season is fast approaching, which means it's time to start thinking about getting a flu shot. According to Northern Light AR Gould Hospital, that thinking should also include considering the best time to get your flu shot.

“In our area, flu season typically runs from October through March and sometimes into April. Flu shots are usually effective for about six months, so if you get vaccinated in October, you'll be protected through March. If you get vaccinated too early, the flu's effectiveness will wear off before the end of flu season, making you more susceptible to catching the flu in the spring,” says Julie Tutt, RN, Infection Prevention Specialist at AR Gould.

Of course, flu season isn't the same every year and can come earlier or later, Tutt said, noting that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention typically recommends getting a flu shot in September or October.

To encourage people to get their flu shot, AR Gould will be hosting four flu shot clinics in October.

Saturday, October 5th, 10am-1pm (adults) Northern Light Health Center, 23 North Street (as part of the A.R. Gould Fall Health Fair)

Drive-thru event on Saturday, October 12th from 10am to 12pm (adults) at the AR Gould Hospital Campus (140 Academy Street)

Saturday, October 26th, 9-11am (Pediatrics) Northern Light Health Center, 23 North Street (Pediatrics Office)

Flu shots are also available at flu vaccination clinics run by your family doctor, local pharmacies and other community organizations.

“It doesn't really matter where you get your flu shot, it's just that you get it and that you get it at the right time to get the most protection,” Tutt said.

She also reminds people that while the vaccine is a great way to prevent people from getting sick, it's also important to stay home when you're sick.

“While many of us will try to push through the illness so as not to let our colleagues down, the best thing we can all do to prevent the spread of the disease is to stay home,” says Tutt. “Please follow the protocols in place at your workplace to avoid spreading the disease to others. Here at AR Gould, anyone with a fever must be fever-free for 24 hours without medication before returning to work. These protocols may seem excessive, but they are in place to keep our staff and patients safe.”
