More than half of parents didn't get their child's flu vaccine last year
Hesitancy about children's flu vaccines is increasing, with more than half of parents saying they did not vaccinate their children against the common winter disease last year.
This is despite the fact that 55% of parents said their children missed school. Last winter was due to influenza. New research carried out for the Irish Patients' Association (IPA) has shown that a flu-like illness is the culprit.
This has affected children's education and put pressure on families, with one in five parents now relying on grandparents to care for their children during illness.
The survey of 1,062 people found that 53% of those surveyed were hesitant to give their child a winter flu vaccine last year.
This is an increase from a 2023 survey in which 44% of people were hesitant about getting vaccinated, the IPA said.
The main factor was time constraints, with 17% of parents saying they simply did not have time to arrange vaccinations.
Emergency medicine consultant and prehospital physician Dr. Lisa Cunningham encouraged parents to consider the following: Nasal spray influenza vaccine For their children.
“It's encouraging that parents are becoming more aware of the seriousness of the influenza virus, including the complications it can cause,” she says.
“My recommendation to parents is to take advantage of the many opportunities to get preventive measures with influenza nasal sprays.”
The vaccine will be available through some schools, pharmacies and GPs. Children ages 2 to 17 are free.
Stephen McMahon, spokesperson for the Irish Patients Association, said: “This research shows that families are highly affected by influenza and flu-like symptoms, and time constraints when it comes to vaccination can be a major challenge for parents. It's a problem,” he said.
