LA County Reports First West Nile Virus Death in 2020
Los Angeles County recorded the first death of the year caused by the West Nile virus, officials announced Wednesday.
The patient, an elderly person in the South Los Angeles area, was first hospitalized before he died of a neuroinvasive disease associated with the West Nile virus, the county public health department said.
“The West Nile virus remains a serious health threat to residents of Los Angeles counties,” said county health official Muntu Davis in writing. “We recommend that residents check out items that can hold water in and out of the house, breed mosquitoes, and cover, clean or tidy those items inside and outside the house.”
Davis also recommended that residents use EPA-registered mosquito repellent products to protect themselves from mosquito-borne diseases, especially during the mosquito peak season, which runs from June to November. ..
Long Beach and Pasadena are not included, as five cases have been recorded in the county so far this year and cases identified in these cities have been reported by the local health department. It is estimated that more than 10,000 people in the country are infected with the virus each year, but most people are not aware that they have the virus due to mild symptoms.

Cover water storage containers such as buckets and rain barrels. If you don’t have a lid, use wire mesh with holes that are smaller than the adult mosquitoes. Remove water standing in flowerpots, saucers, bird tubs, and other containers. Clean and maintain water draining from swimming pools, spas and pool covers. Discard old items that can be watered on the patio or garden.
